Sakugen Shüryō was an eminent monk at Tenryū-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan and he was also a post Gozan Literature poet. He was knowledgeable and familiar with Chinese poem and essay writing. As a leader of trade missions, he came to China twice as "Ken Min shi" during Jiajing period of the Ming Dynas- ty. Sakugen wrote down his experiences and feelings in Journey to Ming Dynasty which is one of the few journals written in Chinese by the Japanese "Ken Min shi" during their nineteen visits. This journal is a rare historical record which can help us to understand the society, culture and Sino-Japanese relations of the Ming Dynasty. Journey to Ming Dynasty contains more than 200,000 characters, written mainly in Chinese, including hundreds of Chinese poems. These Chinese poems are informative and comprehensive. They have become an epitome of the cultural communication between China and Japan in the Ming Dynasty.
