This paper tries to use TAPs experiment to study the comprehension process of three groups of translators by observing their performances in translating. Our preliminary findings are as follows: The comprehension unit is not governed by the subjec- tivity of the translators but restricted by translator' s knowledge and the direction of translation. Translators at higher levels tend to use larger comprehension units. And they also show preference to larger units in translating their native language. The use of translation strategy elements is related to translators' knowledge and experiences. The higher their levels are, the more automatic their comprehension tends to be. With the accumulation of experiences, beginners ' awareness of participation tends to increase. Translation skills are the crucial factor for achieving a good translation. Translators at higher levels are less likely to repeat or pause or use the dictionary. When confronting with problems in comprehension, they tend to seek the optimal relevance to the meaning of the original text while students lacking skills often stress the imitation of the original form. The comprehension process in translating exhibits features of being multi - hierarchical, dynamic, unstable and vague.
