Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) refers to purposeful acts (e.g., cutting, carving, burning) that people do to deliberately damage their own body tissues for non-suicidal reasons (e.g., to regulate affect, punish oneself, express a need to others). This is a type of dangerous behavior and is most commonly seen in adolescents. With the widespread use of the Intemet, the online network has become an indispensable part of adolescents' lives. Moreover, youth who injure themselves are likely to be more engaged in online activities than those who do not self-injure. Thus, the presentation of NSSI on the Internet has attracted the attention of researchers. It has been revealed that most non-suicidal self-injurers who present their NSSI on the Interact are females between 12 to 20 years old. These adolescents show their NSSI on the Internet through words, pictures and videos, and the content includes NSSI behaviors (e.g., bloody NSSI scenes), treatments of the wound (e.g., cleaning up the wound after NSSI), and methods of hiding scars. It also includes the description of NSSI triggers, their addictions to NSSI, and professional help-seeking experiences. Although empirical research is relatively rare, researchers suggest that the motivations of online N S SI presentation are considered as follows: (1) Self-Oriented Motivations. Many adolescents who hurt themselves choose to present their NSSI online to express themselves. Non-suicidal self-injured adolescents are usually frustrated with emotional expression in everyday lives, and Internet is supposed to be a safe place for them to show their NSSI and express their negative feelings. (2) Social Motivations. By showing their wounds and experiences online, these adolescents provide support to other self-injurers and warn others not to try to hurt themselves. They also seek social support and acceptance from those who are able to understand them. The online NSSI presentation may have beneficial and detrimental influences on adolescents.
