The traditional teaching of British and American poetry in China has been largely summarized in this paper into three approaches: art orientation, literature orientation and translation orientation. The art-oriented approach explores more of the charms of the sound of poetry in terms of metrical and rhythmical analysis. The literature-oriented approach examines such literary elements as images, themes, poetic theories, poetic language, etc. The translation-oriented approach has more of a focus on the understanding and translation of poems. Because of the limit of class hours, the different types of classes, and the different orientations of teaching, teachers of English poetry usually pay more attention to just one of the three orientations in their teaching. At the age of Internet, however, the application of modern information technology in teaching has brought into classrooms an enormous number of high-quality micro-lectures which are not only convenient for students but also rich in contents, thus greatly broadening the landscape of the teaching of British and American poetry. With an integration of micro-lectures and open video course-wares into classroom teaching in the past few years, some suggestions have been made in this paper to improve the teaching of British and American poetry in colleges and universities in China.
