摘　　要：教育是当代中国人最为关心的公共问题之一,但这种关心在许多时候主要局限于操作性、技术性层面,而对何为教育,以及自由与教育的关系等基础问题则明显关注不足。在这一方面,洛克、密尔等西方哲人的相关思考能给我们带来相当多的启发。大致而言,现代教育最重要的目的是培育自由的个体,即真正意义上的现代人。而我们目前那种过度专业化的教育模式,无助于对自由心智的培育。Education is one of the common problems that the contemporary Chinese people are most concerned about. In many cases, this concern mainly confined to operational, technical level, rather than paying attention to the question of what constitutes basic education and the relationship between freedom and education and so on. But Locke, Mill and other Western philosophers＇ thoughts on them could inspire us. Broadly speaking, the most important purpose of modern education is to foster individuals with freedom, namely the real modern. Therefore the over-specialized education model does not contribute to cultivating of the mind with freedom.
