摘　　要：论述ESP教学的起源、理据以及国内外的发展概况,分析通用英语和专门用途英语的区别和有关问题。最后,通过作者的个人教学和社会工作经历阐述ESP对我国社会发展和经济建设所起的重大作用,以之说明ESP在中国将会有更为广阔的发展前景。The present paper deals with the origin, three theoretical foundations and the development of ESP at home and abroad; pinpoints the disparities between ESP and EGP, then indicates the important role played by ESP in the social development and economical construction of our country. It is believed, with the increasing social needs as its driving force, ESP will have a much more promising prospect in China.
