Indirect anaphora are anaphors that refer to an entity that is different from but related to what its antecedent reters to. In the case of indirect anaphora in Japanese, an antecedent can be a proper noun or a common noun, or even a sentence, and an anaphor is mainly a bare noun or "sono+noun". Anaphors play an important role in discourse. First, it is a cohesive device in discourse, connecting the preceding discourse and the present discourse by bearing a particular relationship in meaning to its antecedent and acquiring its interpretation from this relationship. Secondly, it functions to continue a topic. When its antecedent introduces a topic in an extract of discourse, the anaphor can develop the topic. Thirdly, an anaphor can provide new information, introducing an entity different from but closely related to the referent of the antecedent.
