美国警察制度及翻译——从齐默尔曼案的身份误译谈起

摘　　要：发生在美国的齐默尔曼案因涉及种族问题引起各界高度关注。不少中文媒体将齐默尔曼的身份译为"协警"。这一翻译存在误译,其原因在于一是新闻翻译时间仓促;二是译者对美国警察制度缺乏了解;三是对译语一词多义现象处理疏忽。齐默尔曼身份的正确译法是社区守望协调员或邻里守望协调员。为避免在类似的翻译中发生误义,译者应当以严格的职业操守要求自己,充分了解目标语国家与源语国家存在的制度差异,并慎重处理一词多义现象。The Qimorman case occurred in the United States, which aroused the attention from all circles. Many Chi- nese media have translated the identity of Qimorman into an ＂auxiliary police＂. The problem of mistranslation is caused by three reasons. Firstly, the translation time of news is limited. Secondly, the translator doesn＇t understand American police system enough. Thirdly, the translator neglected the polysemy phenomenon of target language. The correct version of Qimorman ~s identity is Neighborhood Watching Coordinator or Neighbors Watching Coordinator. To avoid the similar mistranslation, the translators should set strict demands on themselves. They are also required to fully understand the systematic difference between target language and source language and cope with the phenomenon of polysemy.
