Taoism may be defined therefore as romantic individualism, baptized in the fire of what Nietzsche calls "the grand distrust". It is the natural and necessary counterpart to the complacent2 gregariousness of Confucianism. Come what may, the first prompting of a Taoist is to "debunk3", so much folly4 and bad taste does he see in this all-too-human world. The urge to debunk is probably the most basic of Taoist traits. Yet, to debunk just the world would make but half a Taoist. A full-grown Taoist will start with a debunking of humanity itself and end with a thorough debunking of himself.
