According to statistics,"can"is most frequently used in the category of modality. As polysemy, through a series of evolution,it has developed to grammatical function. However, whether"can"is an epistemic modality or not has not reach a consensus yet.In order to improve the previous studies, based on several corpuses,it tries to analyze the whole grammaticalization process as well as the mechanism from semantic, and cognition. And by dating and diachronic research method,it is focused on the modern English period. Finally,it proves that "can"has already used as epistemic modality to judge and speculate the truthfulness of proposition.
