In the literature of Zhu Xi (1130-1200), the application of the term Taiji shuo (Explanation of the Supreme Ulti- mate) was obscure, which concretely referred to either the Taiji jieyi (Explication of the Meaning of the Supreme Ultimate) written by Zhu Xi himself, his article "Explanation of the Supreme Ultimate" (Taiji shuo 太极说) which was included in chapter sixty-seven of the Collected Writings of Zhu Xi, the article "An Explanation of the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate" (Taiji ushuo jieyi 太极图说解义) written by Zhang Shi (1133-1180), or the "Interpretation of the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate" (Taiji tushuo 太极图说) written by Zhou Dunyi (1017-1073). Besides, in the correspondence among Zhang Shi, Lv Zuqian (1137-118t), Wang Yingchen (1118-1176), and Zhu Xi, their interpretive writings on Zhou Dunyi's Taiji tushuo were generally called Taiji shuo or Taiji jie. Therefore, the obscure application of the term Taiji shuo by them was nothing but term of convenience, and later when publishing their works they used different names to distinguish their ideas.
