林语堂《瞬息京华》译本考——兼议林语堂故居公布的“郁达夫译”《瞬息京华》之真伪与价值

摘　　要：《瞬息京华》(Moment in Peking)是林语堂的英文名作。1938年小说问世以来,节译盗印盛行,讹传至今。小说尚未付梓,林语堂便函请好友郁达夫代为汉译,后因郁达夫遇害,译事遂告中断。2015年10月,台北林语堂故居公布了一份《瞬息京华》译文残稿,载于《华侨评论月刊》,译者署名思。刊名和译者虽与史载不符,馆方宣称此即达夫佚文。本文首先爬梳迄今所见各版《瞬息京华》,钩沉数个鲜见译本,希冀为《瞬息京华》的史料添砖加瓦。继而讨论《瞬息京华》牵涉的一桩文坛悬案,探究郁达夫翻译《瞬息京华》始末,厘清关于郁氏未克译竣的诸多误解。最后,本文为思译文一辩。王贺先生认为此稿拙陋不堪,乃一劣译。笔者例证译虽非达夫佚文,但译笔雅驯,风格独特,是目前所见《瞬息京华》之最佳汉译。Moment in Peking is a well-known novel in English by Lin Yutang. Since its first publication in 1938, pirate editions of translation or abridged translations have been galore till today. Even before the novel went to the printer, Lin had written to Yu Dafu, a good friend of his, to turn it into Chinese for him. But as a result of Yu＇ s death, the translation was suspended. It was not till October 2015 that the Lin Yutang House in Taipei published a fragment of a translation, actually by Fan Si, of Moment in Peking in Overseas Chinese Review, a monthly. Although the title of the magazine and the name of the translator do not tally with the historical facts, the Lin Yutang House claims that it is a translation by Yu Dafu. This article is an attempt to add to the historical material surrounding Moment in Peking by going through various editions of the novel that the writer has read and exploring a number of rarely seen translations before proceeding to diseuss an unsettled literary case involving Moment in Peking by further exploring the process in which Yu Dafu translated it and sorting out a number of misunderstandings in relation to why Yu did not finish his translation, and, towards the end of this article, the writer would argue for the translation by Fan Si against Mr Wang He＇s claim that his translation is of inferior quality by citing examples to demonstrate that Fan Si＇s translation, not that of Yu Dafu＇ s, is elegant in wording and unique in style, the best one of Moment in Peking one has ever seen.
