摘　　要：南海自古就是中国的领海,南海一词的命名是中国人民认识客观世界、根据地理特征所赋予的文字代号,它富含中国元素,有着浓厚的中国情结。因此在翻译时要充分考虑其深刻的文化内涵和历史渊源。从语言学角度出发,结合当下的通用语研究,建议在南海英译时直接采用汉语拼音。采用汉语拼音意义重大,它不仅彰显了我国的传统文化,提升我国的话语权,而且还为英语提供了丰富词源。Nanhai has been China's territorial waters since ancient time. Its naming is the result of how Chinese people understand the objective world based on its geographical entity. Its naming is rich in and full of culture with Chinese characteristics and sentiments. Hence,account should be taken into when it comes to its cultural connotation and historical origin. From the perspective of linguistics in combination with lingua franca,it is concluded that given that there is no equivalence between the two languages,it is suggested that Pinyin should be employed in translation. Pinyin is highly significant in that it not only highlights our traditional culture,promotes discourse rights,but also provides English with rich source of etymology.
