The network language has been increasingly significant in emotional transmission and representation. When this new linguistic cultural symbol is deeply embedded in contemporary Chinese adolescents' daily life, it raises the question that how it affects their emotions and habits of thought. The study finds that the emerging network language has to some extent flattened the hierarchical structure of the written discourses. Going beyond the structural flattening, adolescents display a series of contradictions during their daily usage of network language. They keep on updating the collection of emotional symbols, implementing a new logic to evaluate emotional differences, and exploring intriguing and transitory emotional expressions in media and everyday life. However, contrary to the keenness and flexibility in emotional recognition and expression, the insights into and the imagination of the emotional implications are weakened. The study brings up the concept of "dualistic flattening" to describe the tenses and contradictions of adolescents' emotional construction through network language.
