基于语料库的《论语》英译文语篇连接词使用对比研究

摘　　要：连接是语篇实现衔接与连贯的重要手段,翻译研究也可从考察语篇连接手段入手。本文对《论语》英译文语篇的连接词使用进行对比研究,旨在发现不同译者在连接词使用方面的异同。研究选取亚瑟·韦利Arthur Waley与刘殿爵英译本,构建《论语》英译文语篇语料库,并运用语料库统计手段,对两位译者英译文语篇的连接词使用进行定量和定性分析。研究结果表明,亚瑟·韦利译本和刘殿爵译本在连接词的使用方面具有较多相同特征,连接词在两译本中均较为频繁使用,且在最频繁使用和最不频繁使用的连接词类型上趋于一致,在最常使用和最不常使用的单个连接词上也基本一致。两者在连接词使用方面也存在一定差异,亚瑟·韦利译本连接词使用总量更多,常使用的连接词类型也更多,但刘殿爵译本对某些个别连接词的使用强度更高。该研究发现对《论语》英译文语篇解读及汉英翻译有一定启示。Connectors are important ways to achieve textual cohesion and coherence. Translation studies may take the connectors of a text as its focus. This paper attempts to make a comparative study of sentence connectors in two English versions of The Analects with the purpose to discover the similarities and differences between different translators. We take the translations by Arthur Waley and D. C. Lau to make a corpus of the English translated texts of The Analects. By using the corpus statistics tool, we make a quantitative and qualitative study of the sentence connectors in the corpus. It is found that there exist much more similarities between the two translators, i.e. both of them frequently use sentence connectors, and they share the same features concerning the most and least frequently used types of sentence connectors and individual connectors. There also exist some differences between them, i.e. Waley’s translation adopts a greater amount of sentence connectors and uses more types of connectors; in contrast, D. C. Lau’s translation makes an overuse of some particular connectors. The findings of the study might shed some light on the interpretation of the translated texts of The Analects and may also give some implications for Chinese-English translation.
