A Character Analysis of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice

摘　　要：Shylock is the most controversial character in The Merchant Of Venice by William Shakespeare.Many Shakespeareancritics have been discussing about whether he is a comic villain or a tragic hero for a long time.In order to make the reader canhave a more objective attitude towards Shylock,the study attempts to analyze the character Of Shylock.Firstly,it gives the histori-cal background and general plot about The Merchant of Venice.Secondly,the study explains Shylock's nationality and occupationwhich influence his character.Thirdly,the study analyzes Shylock's character from two aspects-his negative character and positivecharacter,and a conclusion is drawn that Shylock is a multi-dimensional character.On one hand,he is a revengeful,hypocritical,self-centered,and stubborn man.He pretend to be kind,to play a game to revenge against Antonio,and not to accept other peo-ple's advice.On the other hand,he is a courageous and passionate man.He look down upon all the Christians,stick to his own opin-ion,and fight against the strong power On behalf of the Christian.While his negative character make people resent,his positivecharacter lets us hold a mixed feeling of sympathy and respect.In conclusion,Shylock is a successful image In Shakespeare's dra-ma.Shylock is the most controversial character in The Merchant Of Venice by William Shakespeare.
