solid" (or "solidity" ) is an important word in Virginia Woolf's writings, as well as in the aesthetic criticism of the Bloomsbury Group, which repeatedly appears in their works. In the short fiction "The Solid Objects" , modelled on the life of Roger Fry, the writer depicts a man who is obsessed with coUeting objects. Woolf's treatment of the word "solid" are manifold, which conveys rich connotations: on the aesthetic layer, it refers to the enjoyment to the beautiful objects overthrowing the pursuit for the earth power; speculating on the human's relationship, it refers to the solidity of friendship, which originates from the same aesthetic value and the common beliefs; as a term in painting, it means the rich color, which expresses subjectivity rather than objectivity. It is under the influence of Roger Fry, Woolf applies the post-impressionist' s aesthetics to literature and breaks through the bottleneck of writing and gradually becomes a modernist writer.
