On Translating the Names of Cultural Relics in the English Website of Hubei Museum——Using the Examples of Palace Museum and Shanghai Museum as a Reference

摘　　要：文物翻译应坚持民族性原则、简洁性原则、信息性原则、准确性原则及统一性原则。湖北省博物馆英文网站的藏品名翻译中存在诸多问题,如不应该的误译、不合理的省译、未加注释的音译、译名不统一以及译名不够简洁等,希望能引起相关部门重视,更好地推动中国文化"走出去"。Presently, many famous museums in China have launched their English websites to introduce the major collections in English. However, behind this translation fervor there are also many problems. This paper first distills five principles in the translation of cultural relics, namely the ethnicity principle, conciseness principle, information principle, correctness principle and consistency principle, then it draws upon experiences from other prestigious museums in China, such as the Palace Museum and the Shanghai Museum, and pinpoints the problems in the translation of names for cuhural relics in the English website of Hubei Museum, such as incorrect translation, unreasonable omission, unannotated transliteration, lack of consistency, as well as lack of conciseness. It is hoped that lessons could be drawn and we can better communicate our traditional cuhure to the outside world.
