摘 要:本文从以下三个角度检讨戴浩一(1988)提出的时间顺序原则:(1)现代汉语的语序为什么会在大于其他许多语言的规模上受制于这一像似原则;(2)如何理解PTS的作用范围及效度,特别是以往研究提出的例外;(3)如何理解像似性特别是PTS反映的时间像似性的所指。The paper pays a critical revisit to the Principle of Temporal Sequence(PTS) proposed by Tai(1985/1988), an iconic principle arguably governing the word order behavior of a large array of constructions in Chinese, with special emphasis on(1) reexamining the typical counterexamples reported in the literature, and(2) delineating the scope of application of the PTS and redefining the concept of iconicity, which has suffered from vagueness, confusion, and contradiction in the standard definitions(dubbed in this paper as the ‘signified dilemma’). It is concluded that any claim about iconic motivation of language structure should be done in a way that is language-internally and cross-linguistically verifiable/falsifiable.
