摘  要:作为三大英语古典诗人之一的约翰·弥尔顿不仅创作了气势磅礴的史诗作品,也给后人留下一些精雕细刻的抒情短诗。文章通过精细剖析标号为第7的十四行诗"岁月蹉跎",对诗人小中见大的诗歌才能进行揭示和论证。剖析从该诗收煞性论证诗行的解读、两个《圣经》典故的应用、诗行的措辞造句和结构韵式等方面展开,最后得出以下结论:一首仅有128个词语的小诗蕴含了远远超出其本身可以容纳的意义蕴含,从中可见,弥尔顿不仅可以把岩石雕成粗犷的巨人像,也能在樱桃核上刻出精美的人头像。John Milton, one of the three greatest classical English poets, has composed several grand and magnificent epic poems as well as some delicate and elaborate shorter poems. This paper makes a detailed study of his Sonnet 7,“How Soon Hath Time” in an effort to bring to light his poetic talent of “seeing big from small”. The study is carried out through a perusal of the concluding couplet, and revelation of the Biblical allusions and an analysis of the diction and syntax of the lines, the structure and rhyme scheme of the whole poem. The conclusion drawn from the elaborate study is that the 128-word little sonnet has in it the connotation that it cannot naturally contain, and that Milton can not only “cut a Colossus from a rock” but can “carve heads upon cherrystones”.
