Being a language device, they cannot convey propositional meanings, but they can affect the speakers’ expression of tone, attitude and and emotion as well as the listeners’ understanding of the discourse. The researches on discourse markers started in 1970s, and up to now, more and more linguists and scholars have carried out systematic researches on them, so as to explore their pragmatic functions in people’s communication. The three major functions of discourse markers and the relevance theory have been applied by many scholars to analyze the function of markers in different linguistic discourses. This paper engages in analyzing the functions of discourse makers in the public speeches made by Theresa May, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Based on 50 public speeches, the authors discuss the functions of discourse markers, such as keeping the order of ideas and the coherence of a discourse, emphasizing certain information and enriching the content of a discourse, indicating the speaker’s viewpoint and promoting interpersonal interaction. Form the above discussion and analysis, we can see that Theresa May’s speeches have strong logic, persuasion and appeal.
