As an important type of potential persistent organic pollutants, the pollution problem of microplastics has become a global concern and a hot research topic in recent years. When ingested by organisms, microplastics can contaminate all nutrient levels through the food chain, ultimately threatening human health. The intestinal tract is the main place where microplastics exist and the passage into the circulatory system. The relationship between intestinal tract and microplastics is important for understanding the health risks of microplastics in ecosystems. In order to better understand ecological risks of microplastics, the recent studies on the accumulation of microplastics in the intestinal tract and their effects on the intestinal and gut microbiota are reviewed in this paper.
