The Application of Overt Translation and Covert Translation in the Translation of Chinese Children's Literature:Taking Gladys Yang's Translation of The Magic Gourd as an Example

摘  要:德国学者朱莉安·豪斯将翻译分为显性翻译或隐性翻译,她认为前者适于儿童文学翻译,因为异域因素有助于开拓儿童的视野,丰富阅读。然而,通过对戴乃迭译《宝葫芦的秘密》及其原文进行平行语料梳理,分析译本在海外的接受度,发现:戴译采取了与豪斯相悖的以隐性翻译为主的方法。在汉英翻译背景下,隐性翻译更符合儿童心理和认知的发展,能激发小读者阅读兴趣,同时也有助于中国儿童文学“走出去”。According to Julian House,the famous German scholar,translation can be categorized into two types:overt translation or covert translation.In her opinion,overt translation is desirable in translating children's literature,since the"foreignness"is helpful to broaden children's horizons and enrich reading.However,in this research,after conducting a parallel corpus analysis towards The Magic Gourd and its translation by Gladys Yang,the author found that Mrs.Yang applied covert translation,which is opposite to House's viewpoint.The author also contended that in the context of Chinese-English translation,covert translation is more in line with children's cognitive and psychological development,thus it helps stimulate young readers'interest in reading and spreading more of the works abroad.
