摘　　要：美国哥特小说家埃德加·爱伦·坡以描写死亡和渲染恐怖效果而闻名,其作品充斥大量看似丑恶毫无美感的画面与场景。运用美学原理解析哥特小说中丑这一审美形态,并以此为理论依据研究坡小说中恶丑与怪诞这两种丑的表现形式,可以揭示出丑之美正是坡小说深受读者喜爱的本质原因。Edgar Allan Poe,an American writer,is well-known for his gothic novels which mainly depict and render death and horror.This paper starts with the concept of the aesthetic of ugliness revealed in gothic novels,proceeding with the example of Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic novels to demonstrate that the aesthetic of ugliness,which is displayed in the forms of evil and grotesquery,and is the essential reason why Poe’s novels enjoy worldwide popularity despite a large number of ugly scenes.
