On the multimodality relations in written academic discourse

摘  要:书面学术语篇涉及多种符号表征的综合运用,是重要的多模态话语。尽管学界已关注到书面学术语篇中的符号间性,但对其多模态间相互关系以及如何实现交际目的尚未有系统研究。本文建构了适用于书面学术语篇的多模态关系分析框架,基于自建语料库探讨书面学术语篇中交际者如何有效运用多模态达成交际目的。研究发现成功学习者所运用的选择性共现模态与其他模态的关系呈现较强的趋同性,大多集中于互补类型下的强化-联合、强化-补充、强化-突出以及非强化-交替关系。针对具体交际目的,成功学习者能利用多模态之间的关系补足信息、展示数据、阐释理论,完成语篇整体意义的建构,并且有效避免意义的冗余、相互矛盾和抵消。Written academic discourse,as it involves the combination of multiple semiotic representations,is a significant multimodal discourse.Although scholars have noticed the relations between semiotics in written academic discourse,little systematic studies has been done on the inter-modality relations and how they have an effect on achieving communicative purpose.The study constructs a framework for analyzing the inter-modality relations in the written academic context.A discourse analysis is carried out based on a self-built corpus of scientific literature to investigate how communicative intention is effectively achieved through inter-modality relations in the written academic discourse.It is found that relations between multimodalities adopted by successful learners show evident consistency,concentratively presenting reinforced-unite,reinforced-supplement,reinforced-highlight and non-reinforced-alternate relations undercomplementary category.Successful learners can efficaciously utilize inter-modality relations to complement information,present findings,interpret theories,and accomplish the holistic meaning construction of the discourse while at the same time avoid redundancy,contradiction and counteracting.
