Metaphor is a special mode of information presentation and psychological cognitive mechanism, which conveys some emotional attitude and ideology.During the outbreak of COVID-19,media coverage has skillfully taken metaphor as one of discourse strategies to convey information of COVID-19 outbreak, which constructs the novel coronavirus image and implicates media’s potential intention.By combining Corpus analysis tool and MIP(metaphor identification procedure),this paper analyzes the types of metaphors in the reports and the implied discourse functions of metaphor use based on a corpus of reports on COVID-19 by The New York Times in light of the theory of Critical Metaphor Analysis. The results show that four major types of metaphors of war, crime, natural disaster and the animate are used,in which metaphors play a significant functions in communication, emotional persuasiveness and ideological highlighting. The study of metaphorical features and discourse functions based on disease reports not only expands the application of Critical Metaphor Analysis theory to healthy discourse texts, but also improves the critical ability of readers reading the discourse on disease.
