安乐哲译介《道德经》考论  

On Roger T. Ames’s Interpretation of the Chinese Classics: Tao Te Ching

摘　　要：20世纪末和21世纪初的多元文化时期,美国迅速发展成为《道德经》英译重镇,安乐哲与郝大维合译的《道德经》英译本便是其中之典型。安乐哲比较哲学的知识结构使其跳出宗教和西方哲学本体论的局限,他与受过过程哲学教育的郝大维相得益彰,将合作翻译的《道德经》文本置于本原的中国哲学土壤,对其进行中国化的解读。正是得益于于道家哲学语境中阐释道家哲学思想,他们能与《道德经》文本视域融合,提出一套他们认为适合中国哲学经典传译的策略性框架。该框架主要包括:历史背景说明性序言、哲学导论(即关联宇宙学解释语境说明)、关键哲学术语词汇表、校对过的中文原文以及与原文相对应的"自觉自明的译文"。"自觉自明的译文"是安郝提出的创新名词,指的是二人回到原典,把文本放置在它本原语境中,抛开汉英词典,在哲学框架下做出的创见性翻译。基于如上策略性创新框架,安郝二人得以让中国哲学讲中国话,译成他们全新的21世纪《道德经》译本。At the end of the 20 th century and the beginning of the 21 st century,the United States rapidly developed into an important hub in the translation of Tao Te Ching,among which the English version co-translated by Roger T. Ames and David L. Hall is a typical representative. Roger T. Ames’ s knowledge structure of comparative philosophy enables him to break through the limitations of religion and western philosophical ontology. He brings out the best in David L. Hall,who has received an education of process philosophy,and implants the co-translated text of Tao Te Ching on the soil of the original Chinese philosophy for a sinicized interpretation. Thanks to the interpretation of Taoist philosophy in the context of Taoism,their translating viewsheds are integrated with that of the book and a strategic framework tailored to the translation of Chinese philosophical classics is later summarized by them. The framework includes a descriptive preface to the historical background,a philosophical introduction( i.e.,a contextual explanation of the cosmological interpretation),a glossary of key philosophical terms,a proofread Chinese text,and a " self-conscious translation" corresponding to the original text. " Self-conscious translation" is an innovative term coined by Roger T. Ames and David L. Hall,referring to putting the text in its original context free from the restriction of the Chinese-English dictionary so as to make a creative translation in a philosophical framework. Based on the above strategic and innovative framework,Roger T. Ames and David L. Hall are able to make Chinese philosophy speak in Chinese language and finally complete their brand new 21 st century translation version of Tao Te Ching.
