摘　　要：文章依据张之洞的奏章、公牍与书信等考察这位晚清重臣任职湖广总督期间对其幕府译员的赞助行为。研究发现,他多方招募、高薪稳固并屡次荐奖各类中外翻译人才。由于恪守“中体西用”的原则,张之洞赞助翻译包含五个前提:(1)严格管理和监督新学堂和留学生的翻译活动;(2)赞助译员的最终目的是要消解翻译;(3)严格选拔和监督洋译员;(4)排斥与其意识形态相左的译者;(5)对翻译东文东籍前迎后拒。Based on Zhang Zhidong’s memorials,archives and letters,this article tentatively probes into his patronage of translators in his office.As the Viceroy of Huguang,he recruited 46 Chinese and foreign translators,paid them generously and recommended them enthusiastically.His patronage was conducted under the principle of“keeping Chinese learning as substance and adopting Western knowledge for application”.It entailed five prerequisites.First of all,the translations by students at new schools or studying overseas should be strictly censored.Secondly,to sponsor translation is to abolish translatim eventually on the condition that Chinese scholars and students have a good command of foreign languages and need transtation no more.Thirdly,foreign translators should be selected and supervised strictly.Fourthly,dissent translators had to be repelled.Moreover,he advocated first but later opposed translating from Japanese.
