Based on the theory of lexicalization patterns of Motion event, this paper compares the lexicalization patterns of“eat”type verbs in English,Mandarin and Chinese dialects. The study finds that“eat”type verbs are more lexicalized in English and in Chinese dialects than in Mandarin. And the encoding of“eat”type verbs in English and in Chinese dialects is more complete than that of“eat”type verbs in Mandarin. In addition,“eat”type verbs in English and Chinese have different emphasis on encoding.Furthermore, the lexicalization of“eat”type verbs in English,Mandarin and Chinese dialects basically follows the pattern of“Motion+Cause+Instrument+Object+X”,which can be classified as the mainstream lexicalization pattern of English and Chinese Motion event“Motion+Manner/Cause”.
