叶祥添对中国民间传说的改写

摘　　要：美国华裔作家叶祥添的“金山系列小说”讲述了广东省两个家族为代表的华人从1835年到2011年跨越一个多世纪从中国到美国的移民史。透过比较文学形象学视角分析“金山系列小说”中的中国民间传说,发现叶祥添对白蛇传说、鲤鱼跃龙门和牛郎织女等传说进行不同程度和形式的改写,以言说华人的外来者处境、屈辱的华工史、艰难的文化适应过程等移民历史、现实及其欲望,塑造了华人勇敢战斗、不懈追梦、以家庭利益为中心并积极充当文化沟通者的形象,并在此过程中将中国民间传说转变为海外华人的力量来源和疗愈创伤的“良药”,使中国传统文化在异域焕发当代生命力。叶祥添对中国文化的“亲善”态度,使其成为中美文化交流的“使者”,改写中国民间传说的方式为中国传统文化的海外传播提供重要启迪。In his Golden Mountain Chronicles Series by Laurence Yep, a Chinese American writer, a story is told of how the Chinese, represented by two families from Guangdong province, migrated from China to America, over a period of time from 1835 to 2011, with a span of more than a century. An analysis, by way of comparative literary imagology, of the Chinese folklores in the Series shows that Yep has, to varying degrees, rewritten such legends as‘The Legend of a White Snake,’‘The Legend of a Carp that Leaps over the Dragon Gate,’and‘The Story of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl,’creating images of Chinese who fought bravely, pursued their dreams persistently, focused on their family interest as the centre and played the active role of cultural communicator by telling of their status as outsiders, the humiliating history of Chinese workers and the process of difficult adaptation as part of their migration history, reality and desire, and, in the process, turned the Chinese folklore into a source of power and a curing medication for the Chinese overseas, thus giving contemporary vitality to traditional Chinese culture in an alien environment. Yep’s friendly attitude towards Chinese culture made it possible for him to become an ambassador between Chinese and American cultures as the rewriting of the Chinese folklore provides the transmission of traditional Chinese culture overseas with an important enlightenment.
