译名充分性、可接受性和译名再约定——以“democracy”为例

摘　　要：20世纪以来,不断有人提议修正西方政治意识形态术语“democracy”在汉语文化语境下的相应表述,试图寻找出一个具有类似翻译充分性的准确译名。“民主”更为符合命(译)名流行“三原则”——经济原则、形象化原则和迎合大众心理原则,因而接受程度高,受众面广,在现代中国流行了一个多世纪。然而,流行译名不见得就不能改变,译名再约定也是可能的。Since the 20 th century,various proposals have been made to find a better Chinese expression to replace“民主(minzhu)”,the popular Chinese term for the English word:democracy.Scholars making such proposals all aim for an adequate translation of the original English term,but their proposed Chinese terms have all failed to be accepted by many.The most favorably and extensively accepted Chinese term:民主(minzhu),though not an adequate translation,meets the criteria for a popular name:the criteria of linguistic economy and a vivid image and catering to the psychological needs of the crowd.With the passage of time,a popular name,however,can also become unpopular and consequently such efforts for the pursuit of a more adequate translation term is worthwhile instead of being a waste of time.
