Revisions in L2 writing were explored in this study to better understand Chinese EFL writers’ cognitive processing from the perspective of topic familiarity.Revisions were recorded with Inputlog 8.0 and analyzed within a multidimensional framework consisting of orientation, linguistic domain, and location. The controlled comparison study found no topic familiarity effect in the total amount of revisions due to the limitations of the L2 writers in both linguistic competence and cognitive resources, but effects were found in the types of revision. When the learners wrote on a familiar topic, more cognitive-demanding revisions were made, such as content revisions in orientation and revisions of clauses-and-above in the linguistic domain. No matter whether the topic was familiar or not, learners tended to make more language-related revisions and less cognitively demanding revisions far more frequently than more cognitively demanding revisions.
