Objective To explore the effect of using augmentative and alternative communication(AAC) training on vocabulary learning in a child with cerebral palsy. Methods The case study used ABAB single-subject design to evaluate the treatment outcome of using aided language stimulation(ALS) to train a child with cerebral palsy to learn 7 daily words.Visual analyses were used to analyze the data. Results The child’s AAC vocabulary in the treatment period(B1) showed a positive trend but not stable. The child maintained partial intervention effect of the treatment period(B1) in the maintenance period(A2).The child’s performance remained in the treatment period(B2),and did not show a continued improvement. Conclusion The child ’s vocabulary size slightly improved after implementing ALS in the AAC intervention, which suggests ALS is feasible and has the potential to improve Chinese-speaking children with cerebral palsy’s expressive vocabulary.Future research will focus on longitudinal treatment effect in a bigger sample to improve the clinical evidence.
