从“时新小说”到“新小说”——论“时新小说”《五更钟》的小说史意义

摘　　要：要想厘清“时新小说”事件的价值,个案研究必不可少。“时新小说”事件围绕“小说”和“三弊”两大关键点展开。中西对章回小说的理解和运用在对接后促成了我国章回小说文体的创造性转化,其主要体现在直面社会积弊、适应商业运作、平衡小说虚实等方面。《五更钟》充分展现传统与现代的纠葛,小说开头和结尾用广阔的世界眼光审视中国与“三弊”,却在主体部分描绘了一个“实学济世”的传统故事,从而将“三弊”的批判框定在天下秩序中,造成牵涉内外的鸦片书写扁平化,未能达到傅兰雅的预期。“时新小说”事件与“新小说”一脉相承,可谓中国小说史上的午夜清钟。In order to untangle the real significance of “Call for New Age Novels”,it’s a must to do a case study. Therefore,this article chose Wugeng Zhong and put emphasis on two key words:novel and sanbi(opium,foot-binding and stereotyped writing). The understanding and application of Zhanghui novels between east and west promote creative transformation of Zhanghui novels,including facing social problems directly,adapting to the commercial operation,balancing truth and fiction and so on. Wugeng Zhong adequately shows the complex relationship between tradition and modernity. The novel uses a broad world angle to examine China and sanbi at the beginning and ending parts. However,the main part tells a traditional story about using shixue(useful skills in ancient China) to save tianxia(all lands under heaven),which limits the complicated meanings of criticizing opium. There is a direct relationship between New Age Novels and New Novels. The New Age Novels can be described as the midnight bell in the Chinese novel history.
