Diagnostic assessment is the practical application of the new generation test theory in the field of language testing. This paper, using the scores of three diagnostic tests of micro-skills of reading and the data of the questionnaire survey on the use of reading strategies, and taking students of Class 11,Grade 10 in a senior middle school as subjects, analyzed the results of diagnostic assessment of English reading. The study found that most students benefited from the remedial teaching in their use of micro-skills of reading, but a small number of students with poor English proficiency showed little sign of improvement. To improve the effects of diagnostic assessment of reading for English learning, the researchers of this study suggest that, first,it is necessary to strengthen the combination of language knowledge and the diagnosis of micro-skills of reading in English teaching;second,it is essential to implement both remedial teaching and personalized guidance for students to learn to use reading strategies;and thirdly,it is indispensable to develop and utilize online reading resources to increase students’extracurricular English reading in senior middle school, thus improving their reading strategy use and overall English proficiency.
