摘 要:本文从认知隐喻学视角解读霍桑作品中的同情概念系统,揭示其同情思想的三种特性:神圣性、罪恶性和生态性。基于“体验—语境”理据,作品中的“针线活”“壁炉”“心”等隐喻表征神圣的同情,即个体联结成为合一的社群,显示情感的积极效应;“链条”“圈”“电磁”“催眠术”等隐喻表征罪恶的同情,即个体偏离社群而处于异化状态,凸显情感的消极效应。这两种特性相互对立,但在特定条件下可以互相转化,并与同情的第三个特性——生态性共存,即大自然被拟人化为“他者”,经由“花园”“福谷”“玉石人像”等意象呈现人类与大自然的紧密关系。In the light of cognitive metaphor theory,this paper probes into the concept of sympathy in Nathaniel Hawthorne's writings,finding that it involves three-dimensional characteristics,namely,holiness,sinfulness and ecology.Grounded in the embodied experiences and contextual factors,some metaphors such as NEEDLEWORK,HEARTH and HEART are deployed to convey the holy sympathy,that is,people live in unity with one another,portraying the positive effects of human emotion;other metaphors like CHAIN,CIRCLE,ELECTROMAGNETISM and MESMERISM are constructed to present the sinful sympathy,which means that some individuals are isolated from society and suffering from alienation or seclusion,manifesting the negative effects of human emotion.Nevertheless,the apparently opposite poles of human sympathy could be mutually converted under certain conditions.With the imageries of“gardens”,“Blithedale”and“Marble Faun”subtly employed in his writings,Hawthorne personified“Nature”as an“Other Man”to indicate the close affinity between nature and human.
