用英语讲好中国故事——林语堂和辜鸿铭的文化翻译策略

摘　　要：典籍英译是对外讲好中国故事、传播中国文化的重要形式。林语堂和辜鸿铭两位学贯中西、名扬天下的大学者基于自身开阔的视野和渊博的学识,为“用英语讲好中国故事”立下了汗马功劳。在传统典籍英译实践中,两位大家对于文化负载词的处理有所不同,林语堂倾向于使用保留文化信息的异化策略,而辜鸿铭则喜欢应用删繁就简的归化策略。二者在译作中对中西文化不同的解读思维体现了不同的文化观。辜鸿铭激烈的挞西扬东观念与林语堂面对中西两种文化的中立中庸态度形成了鲜明对比。尽管两者的翻译策略和文化观截然不同,但都能讲好中国故事。全球化的当下,中国文化走向世界已是必然,研究林辜二氏的文化翻译策略与文化观,将为用英语讲好中国故事,向世界传递中华文化提供一定的借鉴。English translation of classics is an important form of telling Chinese stories and spreading Chinese culture.Lin Yutang and Gu Hongming,two talented scholars proficient in both Western and Chinese culture,make great contributions to the presentation of Chinese stories in English based on their broad vision and profound knowledge.In the practice of translating traditional classics into English,the two authors have different approaches to culture-loaded words.Lin Yutang tends to use the fbreignization strategy of preserving cultural information,while Gu Hongming prefers the domestication strategy of reducing complexity.Their different interpretations of Chinese and western cultures reflect different cultural views in their translations.Gu Hongming's fierce concept of lashing the west and advocating the east is in sharp contrast to Lin Yutang's neutral attitude towards both Chinese and Western cultures.In spite of huge differences in their cultural strategies and cultural views,both of them can present Chinese stories well.In the present era of globalization,it is inevitable for Chinese culture to go out into the world.The cultural translation strategy study of Lin and Gu will provide some reference for presenting Chinese stories well in Eng-lish and transmi Hing Chinese culture to the world.
