Both Xu Yuanchong's"Triple Transformation Theory"and Gutt's Relevance Translation Theory lay emphasis on the unity of language and culture in translation.A combination of methodology of the former and rationality of the latter is significant to the development of Chinese and Western translation theories in their mutual understanding and learning process. In this study, attempts were made in delving into the complementarity of the two theories from the perspectives of comparative translation and with combined methods of theoretical and textual analyses. It was discovered that:(1)the cognitive essence of"Triple Transformation Theory"lies in generalization, particularization or equalization of information in source language text so that it falls within the cognitive context of target language readers;(2)"Triple Transformation Theory"is representative of the traditional Chinese thinking pattern of"trichotomy",from which Relevance Translation Theory may draw inspiration for its perfection.
