Margaret Atwood's novel Oryx and Crake embodies her longtime profound interest in writing about food.Through depicting different scenarios in the future society where food is either abundant or scarce, this novel puts the theme of food politics in the foreground.Specifically,Atwood uses eating, feeding, appetite and cannibalism as literary tropes to explore the deep-rooted connection between food and individual bodies, domestic and social power.Food is the weapon that the powerful has to discipline the masses, and it also secretly participates in the fierce fight of domestic and social force-fields,which reveals the desire of human nature and the innate illness of the western culture such as the jungle law of“eat or be eaten”and excessive, willful consumption.
