摘　　要：《海岛逸志》是首部清代海外华侨王大海撰写的游记,由英国汉学家麦都思于1849年通过近代英文期刊《中国杂志》首次译介到英语世界。通过介绍译者身份、译介动机,探析译者在译介《海岛逸志》过程中所采用的翻译策略,着力考察《海岛逸志》英译本如何构建华侨笔下的异国异域形象,发现《海岛逸志》的英译策略选择深受译者身份及其译介动机的影响:既采用“归化”策略增加了文章的可读性,体现了译者浓厚的宗教思想,又利用“异化”策略保留了原文部分内容的东方韵味。分析麦都思对华侨笔下异域形象的译介构建过程,不仅有助于推动华人海外游记的译作传播,也为今后华人海外游记英译研究提供了一定的参考。The Chinaman Abroad written by Wang Dahai in the Qing Dynasty is the first travelogue about the island of Java and the Malay Peninsula,which was translated into the western world in 1849 by the British missionary Medhurst through the modern English journal Chinese Miscellany.Based on the introduction of the identity and motivation of the translator,the paper explores the translation strategies adopted by the translator in the process of translating and introducing The Chinaman Abroad,and focuses on how the English translation of it constructs the exotic image written by overseas Chinese.It can be found that the selection of English translation strategy is deeply influenced by the identity of the translator and his motivation for translation.The domestication strategy is adopted to boost the readability of the translation and reflects the ingrained religious ideology of the translator,and meanwhile that the foreignization strategy is used to retain the oriental charm of part of the original text.Analyzing the process of translation and construction of the exotic images written by overseas Chinese not only helps to promote the translation and dissemination of the overseas travelogues,but also provides a certain reference for the English translation research of Chinese overseas travelogues in the future.
