摘 要:翻译的文体选择不是单纯的美学问题,更体现了一定的语言文化立场。目前学界对严复翻译的古文选择的评论忽视了清末语言文字地位论争背后的民族主义思潮,以及严复本人对语言文字的本体论认识与思考。从洪堡特的语言世界观来看,严复翻译西学时的语言本体论意识体现在以下三个方面:语言是民族精神的寄托;反对主张语言进化的工具论;强调语言可以对思维产生反作用。严复从民族语言的自豪感出发,用典雅的古文承接民族精神的精髓,并试图通过翻译这一利器,对汉语加以厘定考量,从而实现语言对思维的反作用。The choice of transla tion style extends be yond mere aesthetics;it reflects the transla tor's linguistic and cultural stance.Current academic commentary on Yan Fu's use of classical Chinese in translation has often overlooked the na tionalist sentiment driving the language debate during the late Qing dynasty,as well as Yan Fu's personal understanding of and reflection on language.Drawing on Wilhelm von Humboldt's linguistic worldview,this paper emphasizes three facets of Yan Fu's linguistic ontology in translation:language as the embodiment of national spirit,the opposition to various language evolution theories,and the emphasis on the power of language to shape thought.Driven by national language pride,Yan Fu employed sophis ticated classical Chinese to encapsulate the essence of national spirit.He used translation as a tool to scrutinize and refine the Chinese language,thereby aiming to realize the impact of language on thought.
