The two gold-ink Lotus Sutra collected in the Cleveland Museum of Art and the New York Public Library respectively are similar in structure, size, material, frontispiece and calligraphy style, thus also known as“twins”.There are three opinions regarding their origins--the Southern Song Dynasty of China, the Kamakura Period or the Northern and Southern Courts Period of Japan and Goryeo Dynasty on the Korean Peninsula. This paper examines patrons’inscriptions, source of the artworks, structure of the scriptures, type of illustrations and frontispieces to determine that these twoLotus Sutrawere created during the Kamakura Period of Japan.Their frontispieces were created by learning from frontpage pictures of the printed Lotus Sutrain regions around today’s Zhejiang Province during the Southern Song Dynasty, reflecting the cross-cultural spread and the resulting media transformation of illustrated Buddhist scriptures during the Song and Yuan Dynasties in East Asia.
