On the Complementary Relationship Among the English Versions of Sanguoyanyi

摘　　要：在《三国演义》长达二百余年的英译史中,中外译者共同努力,奉献了四十余个不同形式的英译本。他们或节译、或编译、或缩译、或全译,共同构建了《三国演义》在英语世界的多维图景。这些译本诞生于不同的时期,有着不同的文本形式。挖掘它们之间的相互关系,有助于整体把握《三国演义》英译活动的历史演进,揭示古典文学名著外译的复杂性和动态发展。本文关注并考察《三国演义》英译史上各种文本形式相互共生的现象,从故事情节、人物形象、语言风格、读者群体四个维度分析并揭示译本之间的互补性关系,为《三国演义》在英语世界的传播与接受提供可能的参照。Throughout the 200-year history of English translations of Sanguoyanyi,Chinese and foreign translators have collaborated and dedicated more than forty different textual forms.They have jointly constructed a multifaceted picture of Sanguoyanyi in the English-speaking world through abridged translations,compilations,abbreviated translations and full translations.These translations were born in different periods and have different textual forms.The analysis of the interrelationships among the versions can aid in understanding the historical evolution of the English version of Sanguoyanyi as a whole,as well as revealing the complexity and dynamic development of translations of classical literary masterpieces.Focusing on the symbiosis of various textual forms of English versions of Sanguoyanyi,this article analyzes and exposes the complementary relationships among the versions in four dimensions:storyline,characterization,language style,and readership to provide possible references for the dissemination and reception of Sanguoyanyi in the English-speaking world.
