Japanese was a scientific and orderly language. There were many monosyllabic words in the original Japanese system. However, seen from view of modern language, they often form a whole with subsequent syllables which considered incapable of existing independently. This phenomenon shows that monosyllabic words retained the original form(etymology)when they were used to form polysyllabic words.Etymology reflects the connection between words with similar meanings, and word formation is concerned with the systematization of word classes. This article focuses on word groups that contain common syllable and tries to represent the etymologies of original Japanese through the analysis of word groups and conclude the word formation of polysyllabic words based on monosyllabic etymologies. The exploration of etymology and word formation can help us to have a deeper understanding of Japanese.
