Laozi's theory of cosmogony representatively expressed in Chapter 42 of Laozi, stating that“The Tao generates One,One generates Two,Two generates Three, and Three generates myriad things.”However, interpretations regarding the exact meanings of this expression, particularly the meaning of One,Two,and Three have been diverse. When it comes to One,it is believed to refer to Qi(primordial energy),the Tao itself,or the existence; Two may denote yin and yang, heaven and earth,or One and the sum of the meanings referring to One;and Three as symbolizing heaven, earth, human beings,or yin, yang, and harmony;and so on.Some scholars argue that One,Two,and Three merely represent a pattern of how the Tao generates myriad things, without specific references.Through an in-depth investigation,a new perspective is proposed here:“The Tao generates One”signifies the Tao is the manifestation of its function as the origin of the universe and all things, thus“One”denotes the primordial essence encompassing both entity and function of all things in the universe;“One generates Two”indicates that with“One”,the primordial essence of the universe, there arise heaven and earth, hence“Two”refers to heaven and earth;“Two generates Three”signifies that with heaven and earth established, and“One”existing in between, there arises“Three”,hence“Three”is the sum of“One”and heaven and earth;“Three generates myriad things”indicates that“One”comes into play between heaven and earth, thereby generating myriad things。
