With the attention of philosophers in the Renaissance shifted to secular life and human affairs, the self was also faced with a strong tendency of secularization. In Secretum,Petrarch developed a humanistic interpretation of self.Based on this text,my article first analyzes Petrarch's deviation from Augustine and explains his secularized tendency on the motif of self;then cuts into the secularity of the seven deadly sins, analyzes Petrarch's loosening of the logic of original sin,and reveals that it comes from the perfection of self and the legitimacy of the human world. The article finally points out that Petrarch introduced the Stoic concept of self-care and shaped the self as the subject,in basis of which modern individuality was also shaped. As the“first modern man”,Petrarch was destined to fall into the tension between modern and Christian traditions, and struggle between self and God,freedom and grace painfully.
