摘 要:朱子学的海外翻译与传播在很长时间内都与西方宗教教义相联系,将朱子学思想内容与西方宗教进行比附,采取一种“以西释中”的路径,如将“天”“理”等同于西方的heaven、god、reason、law等。也基于此,长期以来对朱子学的翻译传播主要停留在“碎片式”的译介,未能引起全面的关注。直到第一次世界大战后,英国传教士卜道成在山东完成了一部朱子学译著和朱子学研究专著,重点诠释了朱子的人性哲学,成为英语世界第二部朱子学译著,并开启了英语世界朱子学的系统研究。Joseph Percy Bruce(1861-1934),a British missionary Sinologist,gained a deep understanding of Chinese culture and its unique characteristics from almost four decades living in China.Bruce undertook the task of interpreting and translating Zhu Xi’s philosophy of human nature from a comparative perspective,with a particular emphasis on preserving the inheritance and ethics of Zhu Xi’s philosophy.Through the domestication method in translation,Bruce aimed to find common ground between Chinese and Western cultures.Drawing upon primary sources,this paper analyses Bruce’s interpretation and translation of Zhu Xi’s philosophy of human nature from three key angles:Chinese history,Western culture,and crosscultural communication.It then explores the reasons behind certain misinterpretations and mistranslations in Bruce’s work.While acknowledging Bruce’s significant contributions in opening a new path for the systematic study of Neo-Confucianism in the Englishspeaking world,the paper highlights the language and cultural disparities between China and contemporary Western nations,which may have contributed to some of the misinterpretations found in Bruce’s study.
