“The Reader”and“The Wave”are two classic novels that reflect on Nazi history. The two novels differ in the following three aspects:First, the narrative strategies are different.“The Reader”involves personal emotional stories accompanied by complex ethical entanglements, which is a more profound and expansive narrative strategy.“The Wave”presents real events and adopts a realistic and thought-provoking narrative strategy.Second, the themes of reflection are different.“The Reader”reflects on the theme of critical transformation into a questioning of the complexity of human nature, and attributes the involvement of individuals in Nazi crimes to passive conformity and ignorance. The theme of blind conformity in“The Wave”focuses on the reflection of the running mechanism of the Nazi organization itself.Third, the ways of individual redemption are different. In“The Reader”,the protagonist chooses to redeem himself by reading aloud. In“The Wave”,Mingel proclaims the fascist nature of the fictional organization and disbands it.
