知识翻译学视域下《天工开物》中国冶铸术语英译策略研究  

A Study on English Translation Strategies of Chinese Metallurgical Terminology in Tian Gong Kai Wu from the Perspective of Transknowletology

摘  要:中国冶铸术语是世界冶铸知识的重要组成,其英译对冶铸知识的跨文化再生产至关重要。知识翻译学认为翻译即知识的跨语言选择、加工、重构和再传播。文章以知识翻译学为视角,依托艾克西拉文化专有项翻译策略,探究中国明代科技典籍《天工开物》三个英文全译本中冶铸术语的英译策略及其得失。研究发现:以语言翻译与转换拼写为主、文内注释为辅可实现“以真求知、以美行文”;为目的语读者重构语境并采用图文互释的多模态英译策略可实现“以善立义”。针对译名不足问题,可采用转换拼写+文内注释、自主创译+转换拼写/重复,以及副文本多模态翻译策略,同时要注重冶铸术语英译的系统性知识再生产,着力构建中国冶铸话语体系。文章旨在揭示中国古代地方性冶铸知识向世界性知识转化的再生产规律,对知识的地方性与世界性之间的对话、迁移具有一定的参考价值。Chinese metallurgical terminology constitutes a fundamental component of world metallurgical knowledge,and its translation into English is vital for the cross-cultural reproduction of metallurgical knowledge.Transknowletology posits that translation involves the cross-linguistic selection,processing,reconstruction,and redissemination of knowledge.From the perspective of Transknowletology and Javier Franco Aixelá’s translation strategies of culture-specific items,the English translation strategies of metallurgical terminology and their pros and cons in three English translations of Tian Gong Kai Wu,a technological classic in the Chinese Ming Dynasty,are explored.The study finds that prioritizing linguistic translation and orthographic adaptation,complemented by intratextual gloss,can ensure“truth and beauty”;reconstructing context for target language readers and adopting a multimodal pattern featuring image-text interpretation can ensure“virtue”.To address inadequate translation of terms,the following strategies are recommended:orthographic adaptation+intratextual gloss;autonomous creation + orthographic adaptation/ repetition;multimodal translation for paratexts. At the same time, emphasis should be placed on the systemic knowledge reproduction of metallurgical terminology translations to construct a discourse system for Chinese metallurgy. This paper aims to reveal the reproduction rules of the transformation from ancient Chinese metallurgical knowledge to world knowledge, which holds certain reference value for the dialogue and transfer between local and world knowledge.
