The discourse and thoughts of characters are crucial elements in shaping characters in literary works. The way characters express their discourse has both aesthetic and thematic significance. However, previous studies have not fully explored the reasons why discourse expression changes during the translation process. On the basis of clarifying what"servitude"and"option"are,by taking the Japanese translation of Red Sorghum as an example,it is found that differences in language systems will restrict the translation of forms, but the strength of these restrictions varies, which determines to what extent the translator can exercise his or her subjective consciousness. When external factors change and the way the translation is rewritten remains unchanged,it is a compulsory conversion restricted by differences in language systems. When external factors remain unchanged and different presentation methods appear within a single text,it means that it is a choice made under the translator's subjective will.In the process of literary translation, whether the translator can properly play the role of the subject based on the language system of the target language and construct a new literary quality on the extension of the original content determines whether national literature can develop into world literature.
